ROOT CANAL THERAPY
What is all the fuss about?
A tooth may require this type of therapy if its nerve supply has become inflamed or damaged.
This can be a direct result of trauma (i.e. broken tooth) or gross infection of the tooth caused by dental decay.
- Root canal therapy is the treatment by which the small nerve space or canal within the tooth is cleansed and subsequently sealed to eliminate an inflammatory and infective process within the tooth.
- Having this treatment done helps to prevent early loss of a tooth due to infection.
A painful tooth infection or facial swelling is not something to be taken lightly. If left untreated any infection may become chronic. This is of extreme importance given the location of your teeth - in your head! Serious implications can result: bone loss in the jaws, facial swelling, spreading infection of the face, brain and subsequently airway closure.
